Message of 2017 JCIP President

Greetings JCI Philippines!

Every year, JCI Philippines recognizes the outstanding leadership and excellence of an individual and his contribution to the cause of humanity through The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards.

Launched in 1959, this award acknowledges the excellence of the young Filipinos in various fields like Agricultural & Aquaculture, Arts, Banking, Business, Community Development, Sports, Economics, Education, Government Service, Journalism, Law, Literature, Medicine and Science & Technology. The aim of the TOYM Awards is to give recognition and distinction to the men and women who have changed the cultural landscape through their leadership and exemplary innovation. Further, through this project, JCI Philippines aims to inspire more young Filipinos to dream and be better.

Hence, I implore each and everyone of you to look at your peers. Chances are, one of them may be TOYM material. If you happen to know someone who creates waves of positive change, leads by example and excels in his field, nominate them and join us in the search for the next TOYM awardee.

HEGEM C. FURIGAY

2017 National President

Message of 2017 TOYM National Chairman

I am deeply honored and humbled to lead this year’s search for the Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (TOYM). For the Past 58 years, we have recognized exceptional contributions of young Filipino men and women whose achievements have created exceptional impact and positive changes in our nation.

This year’s theme, “United in Purpose Towards Nation Building” focuses on the role of the youth in nation building – recognizing their dynamism and energy, and a common purpose of steering our nation to greater heights. Their journey to success will inspire and invite others to tread in the path of active citizenship, and participate in providing sustainable solutions to the current problems of our society.

The 2017 search of the Outstanding Young Men will undergo an upgrade with its processes becoming 100% online and electronic, focusing on its website as a platform for inspiration enabling greater accessibility and engagement for its target audience, especially the Millennials who are the forefront of nation building.

We are encouraging all of you to actively participate in this year’s TOYM, immerse yourselves in the stories of inspiration, courage, hope and success of young Filipino men and women who come from different walks of life here at home and around the world. These are ordinary young Filipino men and women ages 18 to 40 years old, who have proven themselves worthy of honor and emulation with their extraordinary contributions to the society. They are the modern- day heroes whose selfless acts in their chosen fields have been driven not by awards or money, but for the greater value of service and purpose. TOYM bestows a commendable and truly deserving recognition to these exemplary individuals as they continue to inspire the next generation of selfless leaders.

Disston T. Tan

2017 National Chairman – TOYM

THE OUTSTANDING YOUNG MEN

The JCI Philippines as an organization has the following goal and mission; To provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change. This mission finds basis
• That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life;
• That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;
• That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;
• That government should be of laws rather of men;
• That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality; and
• That service to humanity is the best work of life.

The JCI Values, which is universal in its perception and exhortation, sees man not only in the light of what he is but what he can be. The earth’s great treasure lies in the human personality and that service to humanity is the best work of life.

“It is in this context and spirit that the TOYM award was conceived. If it is idealistic, it is because man must have his idealism if he has to shape for himself a better future, a better world.

The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) Awards is now in its 58th year. The Awards began as a project of JCI Manila, patterned after the TOYM of America Awards, and later adopted by the JCI Philippines as an annual project. It is now a yearly undertaking of the JCI Philippines and co-sponsored by the PLDT, Gerry Roxas Foundation, Inc. and the TOYM Foundation, Inc.

Over the years, the TOYM has become an institution, having developed a reputation for its selectiveness of outstanding young active citizens upon whom the award is conferred. TOYM seek to give national recognition to young men and women whose selfless dedication to their profession or vocation has resulted in significant contributions to the welfare of their countrymen and our country as large, as well as to the advancement of their respective fields of endeavour. The awardees who have become light of the nation totalling 484 by now, is literally a Philippine ”Who’s Who “ in outstanding achievements in areas such as agricultural science, arts and humanities, banking business, law, business, community development, educational business, government service, political and social sciences, journalism and mass communication, sports, medicine, economics, science technology and engineering and other fields of endeavour.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAM

• To recognize the outstanding achievement of our nation’s young active citizens which have resulted to positive changes in the nation;
• To focus public attention and confer nation recognition to these contributions and positive changes;
• To inspire others, especially the young active citizens with the recognition to these achievements and/or leadership of the TOYM awardees- leaders who have demonstrated vigor and enterprise in tackling the problems of society and offering sustainable solutions; and
• To live the JCI Values and consider as a good measure of performance by the awardee.

While other awards give recognition purely to humanitarian work, the TOYM Awards is uniquely given for the outstanding leadership and excellence and contributions to humanity.
